INTEGRATION - The inclusion of a particular sect.
SEGREGATION - The exclusion of a particular sect
These two words or antonyms of one another. People with disabilities, we believe, have the right to be included within society. If they are segregated away from the rest of society, where will they go?
GOVERNMENT RUN INSTITUTIONS FOR THE DISABLED
AN INSTITUTION is defined by the National Council of Disability (NCD) is a facility where four or more people live, but did not choose to live together. Within the disabilty arena, the most common traits are:
Include more than three people who have not chosen to live together
Enforce regimented meal and sleep times
Restrict an individual’s religious practices or beliefs
Restrict access to the telephone or Internet
Include only people with disabilities
Limit visitors, including who may visit and when they may do so
Limit the ability of a resident to select or remove support staff
Require residents to change housing if they wish to make changes in the personnel who provide their support or the nature of the support
Do not permit residents to lock the door to their bedroom or bathroom
Restrict when a resident may enter or exit the home
Restrict residents’ sexual preferences or activities
Restrict access to broader community life and activities
IT IS THE EQUVALENT OF LIVING IN A MINIMUM SECURITY PRISON IN A GENERAL POPULATION.
JUST FOR HAVING BEEN BORN WITH A DISABILITY.
HISTORICALLY, these institutions have primarily been focused on individuals ith intellectual impairments, developmental disabilities, and generally speaking, mental health issues. With the removal of the integration mandate, however, any person with a disability has the prospect of being institutionalized. The Americans with Disabilities Act defines "disability" as "A physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities." This includes but is not limited to:
Cancer
Diabetes
Epilepsy
Post-traumatic stress disorder
HIV
Mobility disabilities
Autism
Cerebral palsy
Major depressive disorder
Deafness or hearing loss
Blindness or low vision
Traumatic brain injury
The below video "Willowbrook: The Last Great Disgrace" by Geraldo Rivera is deeply disturbing. It was shot in 1972, and showcases Willowbrook State School, a school for individuals with intellectual impairments on Staten Island during the 1970s. The film uses language that is offensive within the modern era. As the creator of this movement, I place this video here not as a matter to offend, but to remind what was previously fought against in order to prevent history from repeating itself.
